Book Review: It Found Us

By: Gwen Duffy

Hello! I’m Gwen, and welcome to Book Reviews! We cover all different types of books, but today I’m starting off with one of my favorite genres, Children’s Horror. Lindsay Currie is one of my favorite authors, and her newest book came out in early September, 2023, and it is called It Found Us.

Summary: This story follows 12 year old Hazel who loves to investigate, as she follows her older brother, Den, to a late night hide & seek game in the local graveyard. But something goes wrong. Very wrong. Nobody can find Everett, Den’s best friend. It’s so serious, the cops have to get involved.

Hazel and Den have to find Everett before it’s too late. They uncover so much horrifying history to find Everett. A human couldn’t possibly do this, but did something else do it?

Can they find Everett as the clock is ticking?

Review: I LOVED this book! Lindsay Currie has so many great stories but this one stuck out. All of her books uncover Illinois History, which is extra special since we live here, and interesting. She focuses on tragedies nobody remembers, and the antagonist is always a victim to the certain  tragedy.

This book is definitely the saddest, and scariest book out of all of hers, but one of my favorites. I love how she directs the book, in a way where you get to guess what this spirit wants, and their aspirations. The one thing I would recommend is, the formula for almost all of her books is the same. Sure, the details change, but I wouldn’t mind if it changed from time to time. I also wish that some of her books were a series, instead of individual books. It would be more interesting to learn more about the characters, and still have plenty of time to revisit the history. ( I wouldn’t mind some pictures as well.)

Overall a great book for mystery and horror lovers. This book is the perfect gift for anyone who loves a good mystery, with some horror thrown into it. It’s also a pretty fast paced book, which is great for someone who has trouble focusing.  4.5/5

P.S. You can’t find Lindsay Currie books in the school library, so you should check the Champaign Public Library. All of Lindsay Currie’s books are amazing, so I wish they were in the school library. (hint hint)
