We all love Halloween candy—but what happens when we can’t decide on what kind is the best? We settle for a showdown! In this article, eight JMS students will go head-to-head to decide which Halloween treat is the best!

Round 1: The ten competitors are divided into four groups of two. After Round 1, only four competitors will remain!

1: Sarah (Candy Corn) vs, Cece (Airheads Rainbow Berry Xtremes Bites)
Sarah has been chosen to speak first: “Candy corn is the best candy because it tastes amazing and it’s multicolored: three colors in one! It’s also the candy that represents fall, and fall’s the best season.”

Cece has some comments straight off the bat: “Candy corn is disgusting! Candy corn is literally the most disgusting thing I have ever seen and tasted—hehe!”

Cece is ready to explain her position: “I like the Airheads Xtremes Bites because they are sour, and they are chewy, and they’re for everybody, and if you don’t like it…you just don’t like it. Also, they’re for all the seasons, especially Halloween, because they taste best on Halloween!”

Sarah argues, “I just wanna say that Airheads are sticky, and for me, it’s hard for me to…like, get it out. And there are more candy corns in one bag than Airheads.”

2: Cindy (Gummies) vs. Isobel (Nerds)
With great confidence, Isobel starts first: “I think that Nerds are the best candy because they last longer. You can eat them one at a time and you can also eat them all together.”

Cindy counters Isobel’s claim: “Well, when you chew on Nerds, your teeth hurt sometimes because there are, like…sharp things in Nerds.”

Now Cindy states her claim: “Gummies are the best candy because they come in lots of flavors and they are very sticky, so you can either suck on them or just chew on them, which is good.”

Isobel ends: “You can’t eat them all at the same time because they won’t fit in your mouth, and second of all, they just make your taste buds feel gross and weird!”

3: Sofia (Twizzlers) vs. Gracie (Twix)
The two competitors jump up and down in excitement, eager to start debating.

Sofia starts with a direct opening statement: “Twizzlers are the best candy because they’re delicious, red, and chewy.”

Gracie gives insight on a past life experience: “Twizzlers are dangerous to your health because one time I ate one and it got stuck in the back of my throat and I almost choked and died! Also, they’re just…gross.”

Gracie states her claim: “Twix are the best candy because they have different types of flavors like cookie, caramel, and chocolate.”

Sofia ends the debate strong and finishes in Masterchef style: “Twix are too sweet. The caramel has two different types of sugar in it; even though it says there’s no high fructose corn syrup, there’s still corn syrup and cane sugar. The combination is all entirely too sweet, which makes an unpleasant eating experience. The texture is okay, but the flavors just aren’t there.”

4: Nobella (Sour gummies) vs. Avery (Kit Kat)
Nobella explains why she likes sour gummies: “They are the best candy because they are a mixture of two different kinds of candy.”

Avery disagrees. “Not everyone likes sour. Also, gummies can stick to your teeth and that’s bad for you.”

In between debating, Cindy pops in for a cameo.

It’s Avery’s turn to state her claim: “Kit Kats are the best because they have chocolate and wafer, which is a combination of two things. And I feel like a lot more people like chocolate than sour things.”

Nobella counters, “It is nice that you can break Kit Kats, but gummies are individual so you can give just one or multiple to people. Kit Kats are chocolate which means they’re good but they also melt, whereas with gummies, you can keep them and they won’t melt as quickly.”

Shortly after, Cindy killed a mushroom in the courtyard, which caused a dramatic scene.

Overview
These eight JMS students have proven to be master debaters. Here are three highlights of Round 1.

“There are, like…sharp things in Nerds.” – Cindy
“Twizzlers are dangerous to your health because one time I ate one and it got stuck in the back of my throat and I almost choked and died!” – Gracie
“The flavors just aren’t there.” – Sofia
“Hehe!” – Cece

Now it is time to conclude which four competitors have emerged victorious. Congratulations to Cece, Isobel, Sofia, and Nobella for winning their respective rounds. Airheads, Rainbow Berry Xtremes Bites, Nerds, Twizzlers, and sour gummies are now declared the superior candies!
